Zaila Avant-garde Spelling Bee 2021 Winner

Who is the winner of Spelling Bee 2021? Zaila Avant-garde, 14, of Harvey, Louisiana, made history on July 8 when she won the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the first time. The 14-year-old spelling phenom won the competition after accurately spelling “Murraya.”

Avant-garde is the only African American girl to win the tournament, and she will return to Louisiana with a cash reward of $50,000 plus honors for her spelling prowess. Zaila said, “I was pretty relaxed on the subject of Murraya and pretty much any other word I got,”

Her spelling whiz was very aware of the situation. She said, “I’m hoping that within the next few years, I can see a little bit of an influx of African Americans, and not many Hispanic people, either, so I’m hoping to see them there, too,”

Zaila said, “I kind of thought I would never be into spelling again, but I’m also happy that I’m going to make a clean break from it,”

“I can go out, like my Guinness world records, just leave it right there, and walk off.”

Even though she practiced for seven hours a day, Avant-garde described spelling as a side pastime. Nine of the 11 Spelling Bee finalists were of South Asian ethnicity this year, and Zaila’s victory for the United States puts an end to a winning sequence of at least one South Asian champion every year since 2008.
