Match-Fixing Investigation And Why She Was Arrested?
Yana Sizikova, a Russian tennis player, was detained by French police in Paris as part of a match-fixing investigation.
Sizikova, a 26-year-old doubles specialist, was arrested on Thursday night in connection with a sports corruption and organized gang fraud investigation that began in October. The arrest-related doubles match took held at Roland Garros on September 30, 2020, between Romanians Andreea Mitu and Patricia Mari and Sizikova and American Madison Brengle.
An investigation was begun when bookmakers saw and reported unusual booking activity surrounding the event. Hundreds of thousands of euros are said to have been wagered on Sizikova losing her service game. The French Open was also in the news recently after Naomi Osaka withdrew due to a News Conference Dispute.
Osaka revealed that she has been suffering from ‘depression’ since 2018 and will be taking a break from tennis. Osaka’s choice sparked widespread outrage, and she now risks being barred from the French Open and Wimbledon. Sizikova and her partner lost the game after Sizikova committed two double-faults and failed to reach the ball after being forced back to the baseline, as Mitu and Mari won the fifth game of the second set.
Sizikova returned to the court in between ends of the fifth game to drill her serve, but she struck another fault into the net.
French authorities launched an inquiry into ‘fraud in an organized gang’ and ‘active and passive corruption’ shortly after the match. While FFT remained quiet on the matter, a source said that the arrest was linked to charges of match-fixing. The Russian Tennis Federation’s president, Shamil Tarpischev, told the RIA news agency that he was aware of Sizikova’s arrest.
Tarpischev said, “We have not received any documents (regarding the case), so it’s difficult to make an assessment of what has happened,”
The Russian embassy in Paris has also been informed of the situation, according to the TASS news agency.
Sizikova was arrested shortly after her first-round doubles match at Roland Garros on June 3 ended in a loss. In less than an hour, Sizikova and her partner Ekaterina Alexandrova were defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Ajla Tomljanovic and Storm Sanders.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency, which deals with sport-related misconduct, has yet to comment on the case.
