Sirhan, 24, fired a.22-caliber Iver-Johnson Cadet revolver at Senator Robert Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968, at approximately 12:15 a.m. Shortly after addressing fans in the primary ballroom of the hotel, he was shot three times; once in the head and twice in the back with a fourth bullet passing through his vest. Nearly 26 hours later he died.
Authors George Plimpton, Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill, former professional football player Rosey Grier, and 1960 Olympic gold medalist Rafer Johnson were some of the males who subdued and disarmed Sirhan after a fight.
Attorney Sirhan B. Sirhan

On June 9, while in police custody, Sirhan confessed his guilt in a registered confession. The judge disagreed with his confession and rejected his application to withdraw his plea for not being guilty of pleading guilty. Sirhan’s attorneys moved in chambers on February 10, 1969 to file a plea of first-degree murder in return for life imprisonment rather than death penalty.
On April 17, 1969, Sirhan was convicted and sentenced to death in the gas chamber six days later. Three years later, his sentence was commuted to life in prison, which ruled that the death penalty is a breach of the prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment by the California Constitution. The judgment was retroactive, invalidating all of California’s current death sentences.
