Phyllis Hockin is the wife of Walter Gretzky.
In 1960, he married Phyllis Hockin and relocated to Brantford, where he worked as a telephone cable repairman.
Wayne was the first of the couple’s five children, born on January 26, 1961.
Starting when he was three years old, Walter coached his hockey-obsessed son on a daily basis, building him a backyard rink, devising imaginative exercises and drills, giving him deep insights into how to play professionally, and accompanying him to the majority of his games. He was well-known for teaching Wayne and his brothers how to “Go to where the puck is going, not where it has been.”
The elder Gretzky was well-known in Canada for his contributions to minor hockey and his commitment to many local, regional, and national charities, for which he was honored and remembered.
Walter worked for Bell Canada for 34 years, retiring in 1991 as an installer and repairman. In 1961, he was injured at work and went into a coma, leaving him deaf in his right ear.
He suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm five days after his 53rd birthday in 1991, destroying his short-term memory. Ian Kohler, his physical therapist, married his daughter Kim in 1995. The CBC film Waking Up Wally: The Walter Gretzky Story is based on his ordeal.
He volunteered and coached at his summer youth hockey camp in California, as well as supporting charities and fundraisers.
Gretzky died on March 4, 2021, at the age of 82, after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012.
