It is thought that the first victim, who was also beheaded, was an elderly woman who had come to pray at the church. Mr. Loques was then assaulted by Aoussaoui before stabbing a second woman who had run across the street but died of her wounds.
The attacker chanted ‘Allah Akbar’ over and over as he lay wounded after being shot by police, Nice’s mayor said. Christian Estrosi confirmed that a terrorist attack was implied by ‘all about the incident.’ French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the number of soldiers sent to guard against terrorist threats would more than double.
The decision by Macron to raise deployments from approximately 3,000 to 7,000 came hours after the stabbings. The killings placed France at its highest level of alarm and come at a time of intense stress over the republication by the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
Prime Minister Jean Castex told French lawmakers that in response to the attack, the country would increase its warning level to ’emergency’.
Macron later went to Nice to meet the city’s police officers. It was suspected that the suspect was acting alone and police are not looking for any assailants.
He said: “If we are attacked once again it is for the values which are ours: freedom, for the possibility on our soil to believe freely and not to give in to any spirit of terror.
“I say it with great clarity once again today: we won’t surrender anything.”
