Career
Waiters started his career with the Northern League club, Bishop Auckland, as an amateur, moving in 1958 to Macclesfield Town. While at Loughborough College, he was capped as an England Amateur in May 1959.
In schoolboy football, he played center-half and took up goalkeeping while serving in the RAF.
He was spotted by Blackpool manager Ron Suart the same year and signed to replace the aging George Farm. He turned professional, playing for Blackpool over 250 times.
In 1964, as Alf Ramsey found a substitute for Gordon Banks with the 1966 World Cup imminent, he won five England caps. While selected in Ramsey’s initial squad of 40, Waiters was ultimately not selected for the final 22.
In 1970, an injury to Peter Mellor, Burnley’s goalkeeper, led to Waiters’ retirement. He eventually retired in 1972 after making another 40 appearances.
As Blackpool was relegated from the First Division, Waiters retired in 1967. Taking up coaching, he worked as a regional coach for the Football Association and for the youth development program in Liverpool before moving to Burnley.
Waiters continued to mentor kids and young adults, encouraging them to achieve their soccer ambitions and to mold future players.
He was named as the first Director of the Goalkeeping Institute of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), stepping down in 2006. He remained a coach of the NSCAA and U.S. National Staff Football.
