According to authorities, the girl’s death was discovered in the wreckage on Thursday as her father was among the first-responders conducting a search and rescue operation.
WPLG spoke with Miami Rescue Dept. Ignatius Carroll, “When he was made aware that we were close to where his loved one may have been, then he stood side by side with some of his other fellow firefighters,”
“We were able to bring her and then at least give him an opportunity to say his farewells.”
Stella’s father, who was at the scene with his brother, covered his daughter’s body with his jacket, draped a small US flag over her, and took her away, according to the station.
The firefighter, who did not want to be recognized, has been with the department for ten years. Graciela Cattarossi, the girl’s mother, and her grandparents, Graciela and Gino Cattarossi, were all in the apartment when it collapsed, according to WPLG.
Andrea Cattarossi, the girl’s aunt, was in town from Argentina, according to the publication. Other members of the youngster’s family have yet to be discovered.
Officials say 22 people were confirmed deceased at the scene, with 126 people still missing after the building collapsed soon before 1:30 a.m. Two other children, sisters Emma Guara, 4, and Lucia Guara, 11, who were rescued from the rubble on Wednesday, were among them.
The family has put up a fundraising page on GoFundMe to aid with funeral costs.
