Charles Stanley Albeck aka Stan Albeck was an American professional basketball coach. He was born on May 17, 1931, in Chenoa, Illinois.

Stan Albeck, the long-time head coach of the San Antonio, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Jersey Nets, and Chicago Bulls, died Thursday in hospice care at his son John’s house.

According to John Albeck of the San Antonio Express-News, his father entered hospice care on Thursday after suffering a stroke on March 14. He also had a stroke while working as an assistant coach in Toronto in 2001.


He was 89 years old.


Phyllis L. Mann is the wife of Stan Albeck.


They have five children together.


Albeck coached the ABA’s Denver Rockets in 1970-71, then Cleveland in 1979-80, San Antonio from 1980-83, New Jersey from 1983-85, and Chicago in 1985-86, his second season with Michael Jordan.

In 1982 and 1983, he led San Antonio to consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances. Before their game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night, the Spurs observed a moment of silence in memory of Albeck.

Death Cause

Albeck died on March 25, 2021, after spending a week in hospice after another stroke.
