Shane Meehan is a former prison employee and mayoral candidate accused of murdering Greg Ferency, a veteran police narcotics detective and author, in an ambush outside an FBI office building in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The federal building is close to the Vigo County Courthouse. The motive has not yet been revealed by authorities.
The FBI Indianapolis Resident Agency is housed in this office in Terre Haute. It is unclear whether the suspect knew Ferency as a result of his investigative work. Superintendent Doug Carter of the Indiana State Police told MyWabashValley.com, “Greg Ferency was a good man.”
“He worked in this community for many, many, many years. It is a sad day for this community and for the Terre Haute Police Department.”
He is 44 years old.
According to court documents, Meehan drove a tan 2003Ford F-150 pickup around the FBI Indianapolis Resident Agency building in Terre Haute on Thursday afternoon.

Ferency returned fire after Meehan threw the improvised incendiary weapon at the building and shot him. Authorities said it happened around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday at the building on First Street and Wabash Court. According to the court documents, after Meehan and Ferency exchanged gunfire, FBI Special Agent Ryan Lindgren fled the building and engaged Meehan in a gunfight.
Meehan was shot twice, possibly by Ferency or Lindgren, and was driven to Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Meehan was taken to the hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. He was still in the hospital on Thursday.
Why He Threw Molotov Cocktail At FBI Office?
In a news conference, Paul Keenan, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis field office, stated that the FBI is committed to honoring Ferency’s memory “through a meticulous investigation.”
Ferency was ambushed, according to Keenan. According to Keenan, the suspect arrived before Detective Ferency left the building, which explains why authorities are calling it an ambush.
According to the criminal complaint, Meehan was driving a tan 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck and “repeatedly drove in the vicinity of the FBI’s Terre Haute resident agency.”

According to the complaint, “At approximately 2:03 p.m. on July 7, 2021, Meehan pulled next to the gate at the secured entrance of the parking lot of the Terre Haute RA. Meehan got out of his truck, moved in preparation around his vehicle, and lobbed an incendiary device (a Molotov Cocktail) toward the Terre Haute RA building,”
“Shortly after Meehan threw the incendiary device, TFO Ferency walked out of the Terre Haute RA building. Meehan, who was holding a firearm in his right hand, raised the firearm towards TFO Ferency and shot him,”
Ferency returned fire but died as a result of his injuries. According to the complaint, FBI Special Agent Ryan Lindgren then ran out of the building and “engaged Meehan in a gun battle.”
At 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, the suspect approached the detective and “fired at him,” according to Keenan. When an agent inside heard the gunshots, he went outside and shot at the gunman. According to Keenan, the suspect drove himself to the hospital and underwent surgery for his injuries.
The FBI executed several search warrants at the suspect’s home and vehicle, seizing numerous items.
Authorities stated that they do not believe there is a continuing threat and that the suspect was unable to make a statement due to his condition.
Meehan’s wife’s Facebook page is littered with photos of the family, which includes three children. His daughter posted a photo of Meehan and another man on Facebook in 2018 with the caption, “Livin life and shootin shit up with the strongest men I know 🤙🏼.”
His Facebook and Instagram pages portray a seemingly normal life filled with friends, high school sports, and other similar activities.
Shane Meehan was formally charged Thursday in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis with the premeditated murder of a federal agent.
Ferency had worked for the police department for 30 years and had been a federal task force officer since 2010.
According to court documents, investigators searched Meehan’s truck parked at the hospital and discovered a Smith & Wesson M&P 45 semiautomatic handgun with one round in the chamber.
Three Molotov cocktails, two empty boxes of.45-caliber Hornaday Critical Duty Ammunition, and an extra handgun magazine were also discovered. Meehan is a former employee of the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute, according to WIBC’s Eric Berman on Twitter. In addition, Meehan ran for mayor as an independent in 2019, finishing last with 1% of the vote in a four-way race.
