Career
A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, before starting his career at The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Smith went to college at Jackson State in Mississippi.
First, as a beat writer covering the Indiana Pacers for the Indianapolis Star and the Atlanta Hawks for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he became a regular in the NBA universe before joining Turner Sports in 2009.
Smith starred for Turner for more than a decade across all platforms, working as an analyst for NBA TV, a blogger for NBA.com, and a host of the Hang Time Podcast.

He gained admiration from beat reporters around the league, while Smith wrote from a national viewpoint. A former reporter for the Chicago Bulls, K.C. Among those who admired the character of Smith was Johnson.

As first reported by ESPN’s Mark Jones on Twitter, beloved NBA digital senior analyst Sekou Smith died on January 26, 2021, from complications of COVID-19.
