Rupert Hine Biography

Rupert Neville Hine was an English musician, songwriter and record producer. He produced albums for artists including Rush, Kevin Ayers, Tina Turner, Howard Jones, Saga, The Fixx, Bob Geldof, Thompson Twins, Stevie Nicks, Chris de Burgh, Suzanne Vega, Underworld, Duncan Sheik, Formula and Eleanor McEvoy. He was born in 21 September 1947, Wimbledon. He was 72 years old.

Rupert Hine Career

Hine started out as half of the folk duo Rupert & David in the music business in the mid-1960s, before starting a solo career in the early ‘ 70s and later stinting with the bands Quantum Jump and Spin 1ne 2wo. According to his website he cut six albums as a solo artist under his name, and three under the alias Thinkman.

Hine had formed half of the folk duo Rupert & David in the early 1960s. The duo played in pubs and clubs, and occasionally shared the stage with Paul Simon, who was then unknown. The one single released by the duo (1965 on the Decca label) was a cover of “The Sounds of Silence” by Simon. The single wasn’t a success, but it was notable to feature on guitar a young Jimmy Page and on bass Herbie Flowers.

Hine released two albums in the early 70s, under his own name. Pick Up a Bone (1971) and Unfinished Picture (1973). In 1973, Hine, along with guitarist Mark Warner, bassist John G. Perry (then of Caravan) and drummer Trevor Morais (formerly of The Peddlers) formed the band Quantum Jump, releasing two albums, Quantum Jump (1976) and Barracuda (1977). After a re-release of the track “Lone Ranger” (from Quantum Jump) became an unexpected UK Top Ten hit in 1979, a third album – Mixing, a reworking of tracks selected from the first two Quantum Jump albums – was released.

He also penned tracks for other artists, and wrote and produced the soundtrack for Better Off Dead, John Cusack ‘s 1985 comedy.

Although Rupert has performed almost all of the music himself, there are notable contributions from the vocalist Chris Thomson of The Fixx’s Jamie West-Oram, Stewart Copeland of The Police and Café Jacque. Followers of the previous projects of Rupert Hine were intrigued to see him standing in front of the group: a departure from his previous solo work. The four-piece, which appeared in support of the record on television programs across Europe, combined its music with a mission to highlight the dangers of the all-too-powerful media. Unusually and with a delicate sense of irony, the men who accompanied Rupert in public appearances were actors and not musicians (Greg Crutwell, Andy Baker and Julian Clary).

And Thinkman was absolutely no real band. By the time the last album was released, the focus of the band had moved away from media topics and to environmental concerns (the track “Take Them to the Traitors’ Gate” was dedicated to Prince Charles) and a new team of supporters had been recruited for appearance; the line-up included Karl Hyde and Rick Smith of Underworld.
