Ricky Valance was a Welsh singer. His birth name David Spencer and he was born on 10 April 1939 in Ynysddu, United Kingdom. He was best known for UK number-one single “Tell Laura I Love Her,” which in 1960 sold more than a million copies.
Ricky Valance Career
Upon leaving the military, he began his musical career. He played in local clubs for a few years before being spotted by an EMI A&R agent, put with the record producer Norrie Paramor, and signed to EMI ‘s Columbia label. During the first recording session, Valance was offered an opportunity to cover the American hit by Ray Peterson, “Tell Laura I Love Her. ” In September 1960, thanks to airplay on Radio Luxembourg, he was rewarded with a number 1 single.

The BBC had declined to broadcast disaster songs for teens like “Tell Laura I Love Her.” In the United Kingdom, many American deathrock records have simply never been released.
He was rewarded in 2015 for being the first Welshman to have a UK Number One hit at a St David’s Day concert at the Wales Millennium Centre. He released a final single in 2017, called Welcome Home, to raise money for the Royal Air Force Museum and the Association of RAF.
