From 1977 to 2021, Mantfombi Dlamini, Princess of eSwatini, Queen of the Zulu, acted as the Great Wife to King Goodwill Zwelithini as the Zulu Kingdom’s queen consort. She was born in 1956 in the Zulu Kingdom.
When her husband died in March 2021, Dlamini became queen regent. A month later, she passed away.
She was 65 years old.

Following the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini on March 12, 2021, she was named as the interim leader of the Zulu Kingdom under the title of queen regent on March 21, 2021. This was in line with his wishes, and she was to fill the role temporarily before the next Zulu King was chosen.
She would have appointed the next king if she had lived, and her first son, Prince Misuzulu Zulu, is thought to have been her preference.
While the Zulu royal family follows traditional African practices such as polygamy, this is not seen as incompatible with its professed Christianity, as it is in eSwatini.
The royal family announced Mantfombi Dlamini’s hospitalization on April 27, 2021. Two days later, she passed away. Her death, according to Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, was “unexpected.”
