Les McKeown, the Bay City Rollers‘ longtime lead singer, died unexpectedly at the age of 65. His wife Peko Keiko and son Jubei McKeown survive him. On Thursday, April 22, the Scottish pop singer’s family announced his death on social media.
As a child of the 1970s, I’m not ashamed to say I adored The Bay City Rollers.
I’m devastated to hear that Les McKeown has died.
The couple has one child, Jubei, after 44 years of marriage.
His son was included in a touching social media tribute to his father, alongside his mother, who wrote: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown. Leslie died suddenly at home on Tuesday 20 April 2021.”
His son was included in a touching social media tribute to his father, alongside his mother, who wrote, “We are currently making arrangements for his funeral and ask for privacy after the shock of our profound loss. Thank you. Keiko and Jubei McKeown.”
Peko Keiko And Les McKeown
Peko Keiko had a long and tumultuous marriage with the singer, in which she stood by him amid his confessions of many gay affairs.
In the aftermath of the story, Les spoke candidly to the Scottish Sun about how loving his wife had been, saying, “Peko’s an incredible woman. There have been times when she’s forgiven me for cheating with other women. I think this has been harder.”
“This gay thing has been really hard for her to confront.”
“She has been a big rock holding the family together and I’m really lucky to have her.”
Peko has yet to make a public announcement since her husband’s death, but fans got a glimpse into her mental state thanks to the band’s former boss, John MacLaughlan, who told the Daily Record: “I’m very sad and shocked and so is Peko, his wife.”
“She is heartbroken and called me from Les’ phone with the news. I picked up and thought it was Les wanting a chat.”
Les always expressed his admiration for his wife Peko and how she handled the numerous controversies in which he was involved.
He said, “God know why she’s put up with me for this long, she could have kicked my arse right out the door a long time ago.”
He continued, “We went through a bit of a rough patch but then we got back together again and everything is good now, I don’t want to change things round in my life now. I met her in 1978 and we’ve been going out ever since, how long is that?”

RIP Les McKeown…in 2013 I met him on a train going to Bognor Regis…that was him travelling to a gig at Butlin’s. He was delighted to be recognised and chatted freely about his time as a teen sensation. Rest easy sir ❤ pic.twitter.com/0wCe4WDaXY
