Officials say a teen girl named Ma’Khia Bryant was fatally shot by a Columbus, Ohio, police officer named Nicholas Reardon while responding to a call about someone armed with a knife on Tuesday afternoon.
Paula Bryant said her daughter was “looking forward to returning home” after spending time in a foster home.
Who Killed Ma’Khia Bryant?
On April 21, 2021, authorities announced that Nicholas Reardon, a Columbus, Ohio, police officer, shot and killed Ma’Khia Bryant, a 16-year-old girl.
At the press conference, the mayor stated that an investigation into the teen’s “tragic death” is pending. Reardon’s name was released by Interim Police Chief Michael Woods.
Woods said, “Our goal is to provide as much information as quickly as we can.” He said the state of Ohio is “conducting a criminal investigation into this incident.”
They also showed three more bodycam recordings. Two 911 calls were also played.
Woods added, “Officers attempted life-saving measures almost immediately after the shots were fired,”
Chaos can be heard in the background of the first 911 call. “Get here now!” yells a female to the dispatcher, “We got…girls here trying to fight us, trying to stab us, trying to put her hands on our grandma. We need a police officer here now.”
Bryant’s family claims that Bryant called the cops herself, but police say they can’t confirm or deny this. The 911 calls are included in the recording of the press conference.
