Van Doren, his brother James Van Doren, and their friends Gordon, Ryan Emmert, and Serge D’Elia founded the first Vans in 1966. The factory at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim took a year to construct and set up.

When they first opened, they only had three models of shoes, with prices ranging from $2.49 to $4.99. The Van Dorens will also sell their shoes at local swap meets on occasion.

When half of their first ten stores failed to make a profit, their accountants told them to close them. Van Doren, on the other hand, did the exact opposite and expanded his company.

He reasoned that the more shoes he produced, the lower the cost of production would be, keeping the stores afloat. And it was successful.

By the end of the 1970s, Vans had around 70 locations in California. Van Doren was the company’s president until his brother James took over in 1976.
