Pau Dones Career

In 2008, the band announced that they would leave their record company and go independent, founding Tronco Records, their record label. They changed their name to “Jarabedepalo,” since the name had the rights to their former record label. They released Orquesta Reciclando (Recycling Orchestra) in 2009, recording new versions of their old songs, as well as one new song. And now what do we do? (And now what are we going to do?), released in 2011, and published in 2014 by Somos (We Are).

Away from Jarabe de Palo, Dones wrote Ricky Martin’s songs and directed Alanis Morissette’s music video. In 2004, the clip for Morissette ‘s song, “Everything,” was directed by Dones and his brother, Marce Dones. The pair was chosen as the “Everything” video was for the Spanish language market. According to a Billboard Magazine feature from the time, the concept for the video was based on Jarabe de Palo ‘s video for their song “Bonito”. Dones has also collaborated with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. In 2004, Dones penned the pair’s duet, Scream. El Pais claimed at the time that Hynde had tracked down Dones in a taxi in Barcelona after hearing one of his songs on the radio. Hynde had performed with the Rolling Stones in the city. Their song was featured on the 2004 album, Un Metro Cuadrado, by Jarabe de Palo.

Dones has also worked with the Cuban singer Celia Cruz and Luciano Pavarotti. In April 2020, in its memoir, 50 Sticks, a message on Cruz’s official Facebook page publicly thanked Dones for his kind words about her.

Dones told Catalan News he lived in California in December 2019. Of his new life he said:

Life is not only music. I used to live for music and for the other things. And what was I doing for my home? Earning money in order to pay bills. The future does not exist for me, and I live very well without a plan for the future and expectations of those plans.

Surviving the disease gives you a certain experience, and this is always an element of control, in the sense that you can measure your state of mind and your fears, and live with a certain calm.

In a 2018 interview with 20 Minutes Away, Dones said his daughter, Sara’s, childhood had missed the price he paid for his highly successful music career.
