Who is Papa Bouba Diop? Papa Bouba Diop Bio/Wiki
The Senegalese professional footballer was Papa Bouba Diop. His preferred position was defensive midfield, but he was able to play as a center back as well where he played at Lens earlier. Diop was considered a player who was solid and aggressive. He was born on 28 January 1978 in Paris, France.
Comparisons to Patrick Vieira were drawn by his playing style and skill. In the opening match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, in Senegal’s first-ever match at the FIFA World Cup, Diop’s second of a total of 11 international goals for Senegal came in a 1-0 defeat of then-world champions France.
On 29 November 2020, after a long illness, Diop died in Paris. The media widely claimed that he had Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and ALS upon his death.

He was 42 years old.
In Rufisque, Dakar, Diop was born. Before joining ASC Diaraf of the Senegal Premier League in 1996, he started his football career with junior team Ndeffann Saltigue. He left Senegal for Switzerland, where he spent a few months with Vevey’s third-tier team before signing in the 2000 close season as a professional with Ligue Nationale A club Neuchâtel Xamax.
He joined fellow top-flight club Grasshoppers in December of the same year, helping to win the championship title in his first half-season and making his first appearance in the next UEFA competition. In January 2002, he moved to France to join Lens of Ligue 1 on a five-and-a-half-year deal.
In 1999, at the age of 21, Bouba Diop received his first call to the Senegal national squad when playing for Neuchâtel Xamax in the Swiss Super League. Maybe he is best known for scoring the first goal of the 2002 FIFA World Cup against France, which resulted in the 1-0 loss of the then reigning World Champions and, eventually, their early elimination from the tournament in which Senegal reached the quarterfinals.
He finished with three goals as his team’s top scorer in the tournament, having also scored against Uruguay twice. Diop has played for Senegal 63 times, scoring 11 goals.
He died, reportedly after a long illness, at the age of 42. Sources told ESPN that Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neuron disease, was diagnosed by the former Fulham and Portsmouth player.
