Yesterday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office issued a statement saying that police are investigating the incident as an attempted killing.
Local News 10 claims that Mr. Jimenez-Cortes tried to set his partner on fire early on Monday morning by pouring a fuel-like liquid over her before igniting a lit cigarette with the accelerant.
Officers were called out at around 4:30 a.m. yesterday to the 4300 block of Northwest 54th Street in North Lauderdale and found a woman who said her partner had purposely set her on fire.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a statement: ‘The preliminary investigation reveals that Jimenez-Cortes poured an accelerant on the victim’s body and ignited the fire with a cigarette.’
Until deputies got there, Jimenez-Cortes fled the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The wife was taken to a hospital in the local area, where she is in critical condition.
