Following the horrific abduction and murder of Texas toddler Cash Gernon, the Internet has erupted in a frenzy of theories about the heinous crime’s motive.
After the baby monitor video from the murdered boy’s room showed him snatching the child at about 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, the 18-year-old suspect Darriynn Brown was arrested and charged with abduction and burglary.
While he hasn’t been charged with murder, the Internet believes there is a larger’mastermind’ behind all that happened. According to a report, the Texas mother who cared for the 4-year-old boy found dead on a Dallas street gave a tearful account of how the terrifying kidnapping unfolded.
She is 35 years old.

Monica Sherrod, 35, Cash Gernon’s father’s ex-girlfriend, called a Daily Mail reporter into the room where the toddler was kidnapped in the middle of the night while his twin brother Carter slept nearby, before reviewing chilling security footage of the kidnapping. Sherrod told the outlet on Tuesday, bursting into tears, “I loved those boys. They were not even my biological boys. I brought them into my home. I had made this room for them,”
She stood by Cash’s small white bed and said, “I haven’t touched a thing.”
“I just couldn’t face this before, the pain is so deep,” she said as she looked around the room, which was littered with toys and the toddler bed the twins shared was left unmade.
Sherrod also showed the harrowing surveillance video of Darriynn Brown, 18, reportedly kidnapping Cash early Saturday morning. She told the Daily Mail, “It’s breaking my heart, but I know I have to confront this,”
“He took him at 4:58 a.m. That’s the time that he took Cash. And he came back for Carter. I can’t really watch it.”
She explained, “It shows [Brown] taking the blanket off Cash and shows him snatching him and running with him while he is still asleep,”
Brown, a family friend, reportedly broke into the house on Saturday using a broken back door leading to the garage, she told the outlet. Sherrod added, “The kidnapper broke in through that door right there. The garage doesn’t latch,”
“He came in and broke the connecting door into the home. We are on the other side of the house, we didn’t hear anything. We were all sleeping.”
The twins are the sons of Sherrod’s ex-boyfriend, Trevor Gernon, 31, who moved in with her before leaving her with the kids in March, she said. She is the mother of four other children.
Sherrod explained that the boys shared a room in the back of the six-bedroom house because he didn’t want them to be alone. Brown was then reportedly captured on camera two hours later returning to the room in an apparent attempt to kidnap the other child but was spooked and fled empty-handed, according to her.
Sherrod added, “It’s on video. He came back a second time, at around 7:30 a.m.,”
“He came back for Carter but was scared off by something. You can see him on the video running out, like he is startled.”
Brown said she went to Sherrod’s house a few days before the fatal kidnapping while out shopping. She said, “I told him, ‘Don’t come back around my kids,’”
“I was out grocery shopping when he was here. I’d left the twins with my boys and daughter.”
Brown was charged with Cash’s murder after his body was discovered abandoned in a street in southwest Dallas.
He was allegedly stabbed “multiple times” with an “edged knife,” according to police.
Brown is being kept on a $750,000 bond for abduction and robbery.
