Gates has a B.A. in art history from Stanford University, a certificate in Chinese language and culture with honors from the École Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes in Paris, an M.A. in Oriental and Chinese Studies from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in art history from Yale University.

She arrived in Seattle in 1994 to become the museum’s director, and during her time there, she contributed over 2500 works to the museum’s collection.
