Who is Michael Chapman?

Michael Chapman was a virtuoso guitarist and singer-songwriter from England.

Chapman began playing guitar with jazz bands in his hometown of Leeds, West Yorkshire, where he grew up.

He released over 50 records and became well-known in folk clubs and the ‘progressive’ music scene in the late 1960s.

Chapman turned fifty years old as a professional musician in 2016. He continued to play professionally near the end of his life, touring the UK, Europe, and the United States on a regular basis.

Chapman was born in the Yorkshire town of Hunslet. He studied art at Leeds College of Art and subsequently taught art and photography at Bolton College in Lancashire.

He was strongly influenced by American jazz performers at the time, therefore he played largely jazz guitar standards.

Chapman developed his own distinct style of playing integrating jazz, folk, and ragtime stylings after listening to other English guitar players such as Ralph McTell.

In February 2008, he sponsored a charity dinner/auction at which a limited edition Vanity and Pride featuring Ursa were issued, with Ursa contributing her own song to Chapman’s music.

How Did Michael Chapman Die?

At the age of 80, Chapman died on September 10, 2021.

Although no cause of death was given, Chapman died at home, according to the social media post. It reads, “Michael Chapman 24/01/1941 – 10/09/2021 RIP”
