Marin Cacic, a Croatian footballer, died three days after being placed in a coma after collapsing during a training session with his club NK Nehaj Sinj.
He was transported to the hospital after collapsing during the session, where he was diagnosed with heart failure.
He was 23 years old.
Cacic, who was born in Gospić in 1998 and was a highly-rated central defender, has received heartfelt tributes from both friends and former teammates since his death.
Cacic began his career with youth teams in Rijeka, then moved to Italy to play for Isernia in the lower leagues before joining NK Nehaj in Senj.
Cacic was enrolled at a Rijeka youth school for bright players in the early phases of his career, but he did not make the cut and instead came to Nehaj in 2017 at the age of 19.
Cacic had already had an excellent career that had taken him to a variety of nations at such a young age.
The defender left Nehaj in August of 2018 to play for Isernia in Serie D, where he lasted one season before returning to his homeland to play for NK Trnje Zagreb, however, he only stayed for a few months.

He was then put into a comatose state while physicians tried valiantly to save the young man’s life.

Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, and Cacic died on December 23.
The center-back is said to have collapsed during training after suffering a heart attack.
Before his death was reported, his current family posted a statement on Facebook expressing their condolences and best wishes for him, writing, “Marin, Senj and your Nehaj are with you!!!
“Just fight, because you only know that way!! I know very well that there is no difference between training and a game to you, but add gas to this “game” and win!!!”
