In 1980, Kaji founded Nikoli, a quarterly puzzle magazine named after a racing horse who had won the 2000 Guineas Stakes competition in Ireland the previous year. He started a corporation with the same name three years later.
The company’s principal product, the magazine, increased to 50,000 readers quarterly. In an interview, Kaji said, “I don’t want to just be the godfather of Sudoku,”
“I’d like to spread the fun of puzzles until I’m known as the person who established the puzzle genre in Japan.”
Sudoku, a number puzzle game, first appeared in early editions of Nikoli. The game became extremely popular after it was introduced to the United Kingdom and the United States. Kaji has created or popularized a number of additional puzzle games, including Masyu.
In July 2021, one month before his death, he resigned as Nikoli’s CEO.
