The Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, was killed in a World Food Program (WFP) convoy during a visit to the eastern part of the country on Monday.

Attanasio died in the UN hospital in Goma of his wounds. He was married with three children, since 2017 he had been the head of the mission of Italy in Kinshasa and in 2019 he was made ambassador.

The World Food Program convoy was attacked at about 10.15 a.m. local time (0815 GMT) during an attempted abduction near the town of Kanyamahoro, about 10 miles north of the regional capital, Goma, a Virunga National Park spokesman said.

As the Italian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement, Ambassador Luca Attanasio and an Italian military policeman traveling with him were killed. In the attack, a driver also died, said diplomatic sources and local officials.

As the Italian Foreign Ministry reported in a statement, Ambassador Luca Attanasio and an Italian military policeman traveling with him were killed. In the attack, a driver also died, said diplomatic sources and local officials.

Who was behind the attack was not immediately clear, but the road the convoy was traveling on was a frequent site of attacks by bandits and armed militias.

The Italian foreign ministry statement said, “It is with deep sorrow that the foreign ministry confirms the death today in Goma of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and of a policemen from the carabinieri,”

“The ambassador and the soldier were travelling in a car in a convoy of Monusco, the United Nations Organisation stabilisation mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
