Keith Allen Raniere is an American convicted criminal and the founder of NXIVM, based near Albany, New York, a multi-level marketing business and cult. He was born on August26, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.
NXIVM established a following mainly through its personal development seminars between 1998 and 2020, hiring many celebrities and socialites. Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in jail, potentially a life term, on October 27, 2020.
However, the group has faced numerous allegations by Raniere and members of his inner circle of systematic sexual harassment of female members, leading to the arrests of Raniere and other members of NXIVM in early 2018. Raniere has subsequently been described as a cult leader in media accounts.
He is 60 years old.
Raniere was associated with Amway, the multi-level marketing firm, through the 1980s. Heidi Hutchinson remembered that during the late ‘ 80s, Amway, Scientology, and neuro-linguistic programming intrigued Raniere. Raniere also worked for the Division of Parole of New York State as a computer programmer.
“In October 2003, on the cover of Forbes magazine, Raniere was featured, shrouded in shadows, accompanied by the appellation” The Strangest Executive Coach of the World. “The” devastating “cover story, written by Michael Freedman and entitled” Cult of Personality, “was described as” a gold mine of previously unpublished data. The cover story included a quote from billionaire Edgar Bronfman accusing the organization of being a cult.
Raniere was convicted of federal crimes on June 19, 2019, including child s*x trafficking, conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit forced labor, all connected to a secret society known as DOS, or The Promise, within NXIVM.
Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in jail, potentially a life term, on October 27, 2020.
A search warrant for Raniere’s email account was released on January 18, 2018. On February 14, an FBI agent lodged a criminal complaint with the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York against Raniere.
In March 2018, Raniere was arrested in a luxurious villa outside Puerto Vallarta by Mexican authorities. Later, Lauren Salzman recalled that the arrest clashed with a scheduled group s*x session, she and Raniere barricaded themselves in the master suite when police arrived, with Raniere trying to hide in a walk-in closet.
On June 19, 2019, after five hours of deliberation, the jury found Raniere guilty on all charges.
