John Ernest Briggs aka Johnny Briggs was an English actor. He was best known for his role as Mike Baldwin in the Coronation Street soap opera, which he starred in from 1976 to 2006. He was born on 5 September 1935 in Battersea, London, England.
Mr. Briggs, who starred as lothario and underwear factory manager Mike Baldwin on the soap for 30 years, died on Sunday at his home.
In 1973, Johnny divorced his first wife Caroline and married teacher, Christine Allsop.
Johnny Briggs has six children in total. He is the father of three grown sons and three grown daughters.
Quartet (1948), starring George Cole and Joan Collins, was one of Briggs’ first acting roles. With John Thaw, he made his television debut in The Younger Generation.
Briggs also served as a stagehand at the Windmill Theatre before serving in the Royal Tank Regiment in Germany for two years.
Briggs returned to acting in 1953, appearing in the police drama No Hiding Place and other Carry On movies.
He also appeared in Crossroads, The Saint, The Persuaders!, and Thick as Thieves, among other British shows. Briggs starred in Agatha Christie’s Marple and Holby City in 2007, as well as the short-lived ITV soap opera Echo Beach in 2008.
Briggs starred in the long-running daytime drama Doctors in 2009. He featured in a Coronation Street sketch in 2012 to raise funds for the Text Santa charity.
After a long illness, Briggs died on February 28, 2021, at the age of 85.
His family said in a statement, “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.
“He passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side. He was 85.
“We politely ask for privacy at this time, so that we can quietly grieve as a family and remember the wonderful times we had with him. Thank you”.
The star was honored by John Whiston, managing director of continuing drama and head of ITV in the north. He said in a statement, “The whole Coronation Street family is deeply saddened by the death of Johnny Briggs,”
“For years Johnny was right at the center of the show, playing the part of Mike Baldwin and bringing to the role huge energy, dynamism, professionalism and credibility.
“When Mike Baldwin was in a scene it was very hard to look at anyone else.
“And it was that charisma which made him irresistible to the women of Coronation Street, and to viewers.
“He truly was one of the most iconic characters the Street has ever known. We wish Johnny’s family all our condolences”.
My Darling Johnny. I’ll see you when it’s time. We laughed a lot, naughtily. Thanks for being a friend and ridiculously kind in showing me the ropes when I was just starting out. R.I.P. Johnny Briggs. 🙏🌹🥰❤️🌈👏 pic.twitter.com/CYjz7YI7ph
