Joseph Anderson is a British politician who with 57 per cent of the vote on 3 May 2012, was elected as the first directly elected Mayor of Liverpool. With 52.6 per cent of the vote, he secured a second term in May 2016. He was born on 24 January 1958 in Liverpool, England.

He is one of five men arrested on suspicion of alleged crimes, including conspiracy to commit corruption and intimidation of witnesses.


As of 2020, He is 62 years old.


From the 2010 Council election until the 2012 Mayoral election, he was previously Liverpool City Council leader. At Liverpool Vision, an urban regeneration company in the area, he was also on the board of directors.

As a member of the Liverpool City Area Joint Authority, he represents Liverpool City Council. Having been convicted on suspicion of conspiracy to commit bribery and witness intimidation, he is currently suspended from the Labour Party.

Anderson, representing the Abercromby ward, was first elected as a city councillor in 1998. He became the Leader of the Liverpool City Council Labour Party in 2003 and became the Leader of the Council in 2010 when Labour secured the majority of city seats.

Anderson was involved with the movement to free Michael Shields after his detention and subsequent incarceration in Bulgaria in 2005, along with Liverpool Riverside MP Louise Ellman.

In November 2017, Anderson was interviewed under caution by police.

In December 2020, as part of an inquiry into construction and development contracts in Liverpool, Anderson was one of five men arrested.

A spokeswoman for Liverpool city council said: “Liverpool city council is cooperating with Merseyside police in relation to its ongoing investigation. We do not comment on matters relating to individuals.”

  • A 33-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of conspiracy to commit bribery and intimidation by witnesses.
  • A 46-year-old man from Ainsdale on suspicion of conspiracy to commit bribery and intimidation by witnesses.
  • And a 25-year-old man from Ormskirk on suspicion of intimidation by witnesses.

It is also known that he has been suspended from the party administratively.

Merseyside Police said the arrests on Friday were made by detectives as part of an ongoing investigation.
