The alleged leader of the Oath Keepers militia group says that before the Capitol riot, she was granted a pro-Trump rally VIP pass and met with members of the Secret Service, court records show.
Lawyers for Jessica Watkins, an Ohio vet who served in Afghanistan, said she attended the rally, not as an insurrectionist, but to provide security.
She is 38 years old.
Charged In The DC Attack Full Details
Watkins is now being held at the Montgomery County Jail in Dayton, about 50 miles away after she was turned over to the authorities last Sunday.
Her defense counsel says that, as she awaits trial, she should be released from prison on bond and other conditions.
A court filing said: “On January 5 and 6, Ms. Watkins was present not as an insurrectionist, but to provide security to the speakers at the rally, to provide escort for the legislators and others to march to the Capitol as directed by the then-President, and to safely escort protestors away from the Capitol to their vehicles and cars at the conclusion of the protest.
“She was given a VIP pass to the rally. She met with Secret Service agents.
“She was within 50 feet of the stage during the rally to provide security for the speakers. At the time the Capitol was breached, she was still at the sight of the initial rally where she had provided security.”
