Jay Barbree, a space journalist, died in Florida on Friday. The NBC News reporter was 87 years old when he died.

Jay Barbree was an NBC News reporter who specialized in space travel. He was the first journalist to cover every non-commercial human space mission in the United States, from the first American in space, Alan Shepard, aboard Freedom 7 in 1961, to the last Space Shuttle mission, Atlantis STS-135 mission in July 2011.

He saw every manned flight during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo periods, as well as all 135 Space Shuttle launches. He saw 166 human space launches in total. He was born on November 26, 1933, in Georgia, US.

Barbree died on May 14, 2021, in Florida, at the age of 87.

Barbree covered the Space Shuttle Challenger’s doomed launch in 1986, breaking the news that authorities were focusing on broken seals at the base of a solid rocket booster as the possible cause of the tragedy.

Barbree had a huge heart attack a year later, which left him without a pulse for several minutes, according to his 2007 book, “Live from Cape Canaveral.” He was out of commission for several months while he recovered.

Barbree was able to return to work without missing a mission due to the prolonged suspension of shuttle launches following the Challenger disaster.
