Ehlinger, who came to Texas in 2019 after playing high school football at Westlake, did not participate the previous two seasons.
Jake Ehlinger was a walk-on for the Longhorns under former coach Tom Herman. With Ehlinger’s death, current coach Steve Sarkisian released a statement on Thursday saying the program had “an extremely heavy heart.”
Sarkisian said in a statement, “Words cannot express the depth of our sadness and the huge void we are feeling, but above all else, our hearts pour out to Sam, (mother) Jena, (sister) Morgen and the entire Ehlinger family,”
“Jake was a tremendous person and was everything you could ask for in a student-athlete. Being a Longhorn meant everything to him, and he truly embodied all that it means to be one.”
Chris Del Conte, the athletic director for the University of Texas, said “our hearts are truly broken.”
Del Conte said in a statement, “Jake was an amazing young man from an extraordinary family with such a bright future ahead of him,”
“It’s just such a tragedy that we are all really struggling with. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones and friends, especially the Ehlinger family and our entire football program.”
The Ehlingers have been through tragedy before. Jake and Sam’s father, Ross Ehlinger, died of a heart attack in 2013, just as the swimming component of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon began. Ross Ehlinger drowned in the Bay Area. Despite this, the Ehlinger boys went on to become star football players at Westlake and later signed with the Texas Longhorns, the family’s long-time favorite college team.
The Indianapolis Colts selected Sam Ehlinger in the sixth round of the NFL draft on Saturday. Jake’s face was mistakenly broadcast on the NFL Network in place of a picture of Sam, and Sam was ecstatic. According to the American-Statesman, the Colts are trying to get Sam Ehlinger back on a plane as soon as possible.
Jim Irsay, the Colts’ owner and CEO, said in a statement released by the team, “It’s very sad and tragic news that we received this afternoon during such an exciting time for the family, and our hearts and prayers are with the whole family,”
“I know how close they were and we’re just really stunned, but we are prayerful and we know God has a plan,”
Irsay added, “We are doing everything we can to console the family and do what we can to make things as easy as possible at this difficult time.”
Colts coach Frank Reich said in a statement, “There are no magic words in these moments, but all we can do is be there to love and support Sam. We will do everything we can. With Sam, our thoughts and prayers are with him and his mother and his sister as they mourn the tragic death of Sam’s brother, Jake.”
