On Wednesday, Walton spoke with MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin, “I believe we won because we organized. We have a message of care love and hope that is resonant with working class Buffalo,”

Walton will become the first socialist mayor of a major American city since Frank Zeidler left office in Milwaukee in 1960 if she wins the main election in November. Because Buffalo hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1965, she has a good chance of winning.

Walton called her mother after declaring victory and was shown in a video captured by The Buffalo News celebrating: “Mommy, I won. I’m the mayor of Buffalo, Mommy. “Well, not until January, but yeah,” says the speaker.

Career

Walton had previously worked in Buffalo as a nurse and community activist but had never sought the government.

Brown refused to concede Tuesday night, claiming that the result was still too close to call. He has been the mayor of Buffalo since 2006, and before that, he was the chair of the New York Democratic Party and a member of the state legislature.

According to the Buffalo News, he’s considering a write-in campaign against Walton.

There isn’t a single Republican in the election. If elected in the fall, Walton told MSNBC that her “priority is putting resources in areas and actually addressing the issue of poverty.” Buffalo is the country’s third poorest city of our size. It’s unacceptably bad.”
