De Vries died on November 11, 2021, at the age of 49, in a small plane crash involving a Cessna 172 in a highly wooded region outside Hampton Township, New Jersey.

He had an instrument rating and was a certified private pilot.

Thomas Fischer, the plane’s other passenger, died in the crash as well. Around 4 p.m., emergency responders discovered the wreckage. Today, the victims were identified.

The plane was flying from Essex County Airport to Sussex Airport, according to police. The plane was “completely destroyed” in the crash, which occurred “under unexplained circumstances,” according to the FAA’s first assessment.

In February 2016, De Vries began his private pilot training with Fischer. The pilot of the plane at the time of the crash is unknown.

De Vries stated in an interview after his voyage to space last month, “You go from the horizon being a straight line, to the horizon being curved and back in an extraordinarily short amount of time.”

“That sense of speed and that sense of transition was just something that was an unexpected, really exciting part of the flight.”
