A Florida man named Gentry Burns was sentenced to two years in prison for having inte*course with many women without telling them he was HIV-positive.
After dating the man, at least two of the women were diagnosed with HIV.
Gentry Burns of Port Orange entered a not guilty plea to one count of ignorant HIV-infected se*ual intercourse on Thursday. WESH reports that two more counts of the same felony charge were withdrawn.
He is 27 years old.
Arrested And Sentenced To Jail
Burns was arrested after an ex-girlfriend alerted officials, and following his release, he was sentenced to 12 months of probation, according to the station.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation into Burns began in October 2019 when his ex told authorities she feared she had HIV from him while the two were dating in 2013.
Investigators said, “The victim had been reaching out to contact other women who were dating Burns in an attempt to warn them,”
“She also provided detectives with the names of the other women she believed Burns could have infected.”
Officials from the sheriff’s office revealed this when announcing the charges against Burns, who was already in custody on other charges, “It’s believed that Gentry Burns traveled extensively along the East Coast of the United States and may have had contact with additional victims in other states,”
According to the CDC, twenty-one states, including Florida, have laws requiring people with HIV who are aware of their status to inform their s*x partners, with penalties ranging from a fine to life in prison.
