Foster served as the intelligence officer for the 1st Guided Missile Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas, after graduating from college and training to be an infantry platoon leader.
He began his financial career in 1964, when he joined the Brittingham family’s NYSE member firm in Wilmington, Delaware, where he advanced to the post of Director of Research. Friess and his wife founded Friess Associates, LLC, an investment management firm, in 1974. Although success was modest in the beginning, the firm eventually developed to handle approximately $15.7 billion in assets.
The Brandywine Fund, a Friess Associates flagship that averaged 20% annual gains in the decade ending 1990, was rated one of the decade’s top performers by Forbes. To assist succession planning and spread ownership among its partners, Friess Associates teamed with Affiliated Managers Group (AMG), an asset management firm, in 2001.
In October 2001, AMG purchased a controlling stake in Friess Associates and owned a 70% stake as of September 2011.
A diverse group of Friess partners, including top managers and researchers, owned 20% of the company, while the Friess family maintained 10%.
In 2013, the company was bought by its employees.

He died in Scottsdale, Arizona, on May 27, 2021, at the age of 81. Friess’s family released a statement announcing his death.
His family said, “We are grateful for the wonderful life Foster lived and thankful to the many people who have shared their prayers during his illness. We know many of you mourn with us, and we will have more details soon on Foster’s funeral,”
