Daniel Alfin, one of the FBI agents killed in Sunrise on Tuesday morning, was a veteran investigator who specialized in children’s crimes.
According to the FBI website, the confrontation in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Sunrise marked one of the bloodiest days in South Florida’s FBI history and among the deadliest nationally as well.
He was 36 years old.
He led an investigation into a website named Playpen, suspected to be the dark web’s largest website for child po*nography. FBI agents kept it in service for two weeks after capturing the site’s servers, having attached tools to detect the identity of users.
According to FBI Miami, Special Agent Michael D. Leverock and FBI Agents Association President Brian O’Hare, FBI agents have come to the apartment complex to serve a federal search warrant in connection with a case involving child po*nography and violent crimes against children.
Leverock said two of the injured agents were taken to hospitals to be treated and were in stable condition. While it turned out to be a controversial move, a large number of arrests resulted from the investigation. According to the FBI, over 900 people have been detained around the world and 55 children in the United States have been found or rescued.
The shooting occurred around 6 a.m. In a middle-class neighborhood located west of Fort Lauderdale, near the Everglades, with single-family homes, duplexes, and apartment buildings.
Julius McLymont, whose house surrounds the Water Terrace apartment complex where the suspect was barricaded, said the gunfire exploded with about four shots – “Boom, boom, boom, boom!”
