Clifford Ralph Robinson was a professional American basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 18 seasons. He was born on December 16, 1966, in Buffalo, New York. Chosen in the second round of the NBA draft in 1989, he played with the Portland Trail Blazers for the first eight seasons of his career, followed by stints with the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors and New Jersey Nets. Robinson was awarded the 1993 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award and was named as an All-Star in 1994. For the UConn Huskies, he played college basketball.

As of 1985, Robinson spent four seasons at Connecticut University. The Huskies captured the NIT Championship in 1988 and was selected to the all-tournament team by Robinson. Robinson was later named to the men’s Basketball team of UConn’s All-Century. On February 5, 2007, as part of the “Huskies of Honor” ceremony which honored the personal achievements of 13 former players and three coaches, Robinson’s number “00” was retired at Gampel Pavilion during the half-time of a UConn basketball game against Syracuse.

Robinson was picked by the Portland Trail Blazers with a 36th overall selection (2nd round) in the 1989 NBA draft. Robinson played eight seasons for the Trail Blazers. Every year, Portland made the playoffs Robinson was on the roster and played in the 1990 and 1992 NBA Finals. After scoring 19.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and a career-best 1.99 blocks per game, Robinson received the Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1992–93. He was a Team All-Star in 1994.

Robinson performed a victory dance after game 4 of the 1992 Western Conference Finals against the Utah Jazz, which he later told the press was called “Uncle Cliffy.” Robinson’s nickname remained with him for the remainder of his career. Following a game on 22 February 1995 against the Golden State Warriors, Robinson was forced to end his 461 iron man string of consecutive games played since the beginning of his career. The streak stands for the Trail Blazers as a franchise record.

On 21 September 2003, on Barbados Island, Robinson married Heather Lufkin’s. His son Isaiah Robinson played basketball in Portland and the Houston Baptist Huskies for the Jefferson High School Democrats.

In March 2017, Robinson suffered a stroke that paralyzed his body’s left side but he soon regained most of his arm and leg movement. In March 2018, Robinson had one tumor removed from his jaw. As of 2017, Robinson resided in Portland, Oregon’s West Hills district. He underwent surgery for treating cancer in March 2019. On 29 August 2020 Robinson died.

The cause of death for Robinson was not clear but he suffered a stroke in 2017 and in 2018 he had a tumor removed from his jaw.
