Child Death Full Details

The infant appeared to be badly emaciated and had lesions on her body, according to the arrest warrants.

Wright and Bishop-Torrence both testified to police officers that they had noticed their child was losing weight since January but had not sought medical assistance. The victim’s father went to check on her before leaving to buy fast food and noticed his daughter gasping for oxygen, according to the arrest affidavit.

What Happened?

Bishop Torrence said he observed his daughter take slow, shallow breaths and heard her exhale with a rattle. This is when he hurried his daughter out to his friend’s car, which was waiting outside, and drove her to United Regional Hospital’s emergency room. Officials said the one-year-old child had dirt plastered to her skin and small, circular blisters on her lower back and buttocks when they saw her at the hospital. The one-year-old weighed eight pounds, which is less than the usual one-year-old weight of 22-24 pounds.

Wright, the victim’s mother, revealed that she had not been able to bond with her third child as successfully as she had with her other two.

A forensic examination of this case was undertaken by Dr. Suzanne Dakil, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Suzanne Dakil wrote in a report, “Even though a small chance exists that a genetic or metabolic problem could cause weight loss, normal newborn screens and the lack of family history would make this highly unlikely.”

Wright and Bishop Torrence are being held in the Wichita County Jail on $500k bail. Both declared indigency and requested court-appointed attorneys on Saturday, June 19, 2021.
