Cecelia Barber Finona Bio/Wiki
Authorities have charged the boyfriend of a missing New Mexico Army veteran named Cecelia Barber Finona with murder after her body was discovered in Nevada.
Cecelia Barber Finona, an Army veteran, was last seen in May 2019 at her Farmington home. Her partner, Jerry Jay, was also gone from the New Mexico home, and evidence found there led Farmington police to be “very worried” for the Navajo woman’s welfare, according to a statement released Friday.
She was 59 years old.
Body Found (Boyfriend, Jerry Jay Charged With Murder)
In February, a body was located in Clark County, Nevada, and DNA testing verified it was Finona, according to authorities.
Jay, 69, who was believed to be the main suspect in Finona’s abduction, has been charged with her murder, kidnapping, and tampering with evidence.
Chief Steve Hegge, Farmington police said, “Today we have very mixed feelings,”
“This marks the ending of two years of searching, and we’re deeply saddened at the outcome. We will continue working as we have since the day she disappeared to ensure the person responsible for this is held accountable.”
According to authorities, Jay was arrested in June 2019 on allegations of having a credit card without the owner’s consent and making fraudulent purchases.
He allegedly spent more than $1,200 on Finona’s debit card in Las Vegas, as well as in New Mexico and Arizona, according to NBC News.
Blood was found along the couple’s porch, spreading to their driveway, according to court filings, and relatives told authorities the couple had been arguing previous to Finona’s disappearance.
According to the complaint, someone tried to hide the blood with potting soil, and detectives also discovered a single eyeglass lens “covered in blood.” The Farmington Daily Times said that Finona lived at the house with Jay and her mother and was the woman’s primary caregiver. Julietta Faria, Finona’s daughter, told NBC’s “Dateline” in 2019 that her mother had recently returned to New Mexico after a 31-year career in the Army.
According to NBC News, the vet was getting ready to celebrate her nephew’s approaching graduation when she vanished.
A Facebook page has been set up to help find the woman who has gone missing. Read, “We will bring Cece home!!!”
