Carlos Ruiz Zafón was a Spanish novelist and writer. He was best known for his 2001 novel The Shadow of the Wind (La Sombra del Viento). He was born on 25 September 1964, Barcelona, Spain. Carlos Ruiz Zafón has died in Los Angeles, aged 55.

The first novel by Ruiz Zafón, El Príncipe de la Niebla 1993 (The Prince of Mist, published in English in 2010), won the Edebé literary award for young adult fiction. He is also the author of three further adult novels, El Palacio de la medianoche (1994), Las Luces de Septiembre (1995), and Marina (1999). He published his first adult novel La Sombra del Viento (The Shadow of the Wind) in 2001, a gothic mystery that involves the quest of Daniel Sempere to track down the man responsible for destroying every book written by author Julian Carax. The novel has sold millions of copies worldwide, and in the UK alone, more than one million copies. La Sombra del Viento has earned critical acclaim around the world since its publication and has received several international awards.
In April 2008 the next novel by Ruiz Zafón, El Juego del ángel, was published. Lucia Graves translates the English edition, The Angel’s Game. It is a prequel to The Wind ‘s Shadow, also set in Barcelona, but in the 1920s and 1930s. It follows (and is narrated by) the young writer David Martín, who is approached by a mysterious figure to write a book. Ruiz Zafón intends to include it, along with The Shadow of the Wind, in a four-book series.
Spirits’ Labyrinth (original name: El laberinto de Los espíritus) is the fourth and final book in the Forgotten Books Cemetery collection. The novel was initially released by Spanish publisher Planeta in Spain and Latin America on 17 November 2016. Lucia Graves’ English translation, released on September 18, 2018, was published by HarperCollins. The works of Carlos Ruiz Zafón have been published in 45 countries and have been translated into more than 40 different languages. According to those statistics, Ruiz Zafón is the most widely published contemporary Spanish writer, followed by Javier Sierra, whose works have been published in 42 countries, and Juan Gómez-Jurado, whose works have been published in 41 countries.

Zafón died of colorectal cancer on 19 June 2020, at the age of 55 in Los Angeles.
