According to Men’s Journal, while flying across Texas in a private plane in 1969, his parents and sister got caught in a thunderstorm. Billy “was allegedly tricked into signing documents for an emancipation,” ensuring he lost the home and money of his kin, to make matters even worse.

He was left largely on his own and traveled through the United States for ten years as a result.

According to his Discovery Channel profile, he ended up working for a commercial fishing company in the northern Pacific and gained valuable nautical experience, something that has since come in handy while going boating with his family.
