The 14-year-old “MasterChef Junior” alum and fan favorite, Ben Watkins, died after a year-and-a-half battle with cancer on Monday.

Watkins, who lost both parents in a tragedy in 2017, was diagnosed shortly after his 13th birthday with the rare disease of angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma. TMZ said, “He was diagnosed with a soft tissue tumor when he was only 13 years old, and the family says doctors told them Ben was 1 of only 6 people in the entire world diagnosed with the rare illness called Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma.”

When he appeared in the sixth season of the hit culinary competition, he was 11 and became a fan favorite and made it to the final 18.

Watkins listed fried chicken with mashed potatoes as his signature dish. He faced the chopping block during the fifth episode of the season, along with fellow contestant Gracie Howard, entitled “Recipe for Love.”

The MasterChef Junior alum also cooked at his family’s now-shuttered restaurant, Big Ben’s Bodacious Barbecue, Baker & Deli in Indiana, in addition to flaunting his culinary skills on television.

An incredibly rare soft tissue tumor that has affected only six individuals, including the MasterChef Junior contestant, is angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma.

A video offering him messages of support and love was shared back in August by Watkins’ fellow competitors and members of the MasterChef family.

Ben, who was being treated at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for an extremely rare form of cancer, died on Monday.

In a tweet, Trent McCain, the GoFundMe campaign manager, and the family’s attorney said that Ben was an inspiration. Mr. McCain said, “I have seen humanity and kindness up close with the outpouring of love and support Ben has received over the past three years,”
