She said to the WTVO, “He kind of just showed me his gun, and I was like freaking out,”

“[He said] ‘give me all the money … give me everything before I hurt you,’”

Sotelo finally struck back after at least a minute of pleading with her assailant, striking and pushing him and attempting to put him in a standing headlock, according to the video.

According to Sotelo, who spoke to a local broadcaster, “He was smaller than me, so I have that advantage … I could at least put my weight on him, push him, or something,”

What Happened?

Sotelo’s pocketbook and the robber’s firearm both fell to the ground during the scuffle.

The sandwich shop employee instantly snatched the weapon, pointing it away for safety’s sake but used it to smack the thief in the head, which was covered with a black cowl at least once.

She said to the WTVO, “He dropped it trying to hold onto my purse, and I end up pulling his sweatshirt off him,”

For the security cameras, she asked him to display his face. Sotelo said, “He wanted me to give him back his gun and his clothes,”

She added, “I just hit him on the head with it, [because] that is what he was doing to me,”

Araceli Sotelo Was Suspended By Shop Manager

By Monday, Sotelo’s TikTok had received more than 10 million views when she shared leaked footage of the attack.

However, she posted an update a day after posting it, adding, “I was suspended from my job after this incident.”

She told a local television station that it happened after she was warned, “If every one of these videos are not taken offline, you will be suspended.”

She said, “They said till everything is removed online. I have no ability to do that,”

Sotelo stated that she was being penalized because her superiors “didn’t want anyone to know” that she was attacked forcefully while alone.

She added, “They wanted to be private that it happened to me and that I fought back,”

Sylvia Oviedo, her mother, started online fundraising to compensate her daughter’s lost salary and employ an attorney, and more than $15,000 was soon raised.

Her mom said, “Her manager has now suspended her from work leaving her without a job after she heroically defended the store,”

Subway refused to confirm or deny if Sotelo had been suspended, or to explain why, to The Washington Post. In a statement, the fast-food behemoth only said it was “deeply concerned” about the recent event at a franchised shop in Rockford, Illinois.

The company added, “The restaurant owner and management are fully cooperating with the police investigation, and we request patience until that process is complete,”

The owner of the Rockford branch, according to WTVO, has similarly refused to reply to multiple calls for comment. The footage has been documented as evidence by police, who told the publication that they are still investigating.
