After they got married, according to People, Billy started a plumbing business in Texas, but he thought it was the wrong direction for him. They started traveling around, selling all they had in 1983 and buying boat tickets to Alaska with their first two sons.

At first, they had a rough journey from Alaska but soon fell in love with it, giving Billy material to write self-published autobiographies.
