Ecuadorian sprinter Lex Leonardo Quiónez Martnez AKA Álex Quiñónez competed in the 100 and 200 meters.

At the 2012 Ibero-American Athletics Championships, he won the 100 m and 200 m, with his national record of 20.34s in the 200 m qualifying him for the Olympics.


He was 32 years old.

He was born on 11 August 1989 in Esmeraldas, Esmeraldas, Ecuador.


In the heat of the 2012 Summer Olympics, he set a new Ecuadorian national record of 20.28 seconds and qualified for the final.

In the final, he came in seventh place.

Quiónez took bronze in the 200 meters event at the 2019 World Championships.

He qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 200m in Tokyo, but was provisionally suspended less than a month before the games for “whereabouts failures.”

Alex Quinonez was allegedly assassinated outside a shopping center in the city of Guayaquil on Friday by an unknown assailant.

According to reports, Quinonez was with a companion when the event occurred, and authorities are still investigating.

Quinonez’s friend and head of the Guayas Sports Federation, Roberto Ibanez, tweeted, “My heart is totally shattered, I can’t find words to describe the emptiness I feel.”

“I can not believe it, until when are we going to continue living so much evil and insecurity!”

“Rest in peace dear Alex, I will miss you all my life.”
