CNN spokesperson Matt Dornic initially denied knowing about an Adeel Raja in their global network of contributors, according to the Washington Examiner. He later said, however, that the journalist will no longer be permitted to work for CNN in the future.
CNN reportedly said in a statement, “Adeel Raja’s ‘reporting contributed to some newsgathering efforts from Islamabad. However, in light of these abhorrent statements, he will not be working with CNN again in any capacity,”
Since August 2013, Adeel Raja has worked as a freelance contributor for CNN, until he was fired on Sunday. According to Washington Examiner, his last byline for the publication was on September 16, 2020.
According to meaww.com, in addition to contributing to CNN, his LinkedIn profile lists him as an Executive Producer for AryNews. The Bahria University graduate has previously worked for national news organizations such as DawnNews, Dunya TV, and Aaj TV. According to his LinkedIn profile, “A creative producer/director with experience in television, current affairs, and live event. Extensive experience working with political talk shows,”
In 2016, he was named Investigative Journalist of the Year by the Agahi Awards, a Pakistan-based annual series of journalism awards. His influential career as a journalist has also been marred by his anti-Semitic views in the past. Raja allegedly tweeted during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, “The only reason I am supporting Germany in the finals — Hitler was a German and he did good with those Jews.”
The next day, he posted ‘Hail Hitler’ in response to the offensive tweet.
It’s thought that his most recent tweet was sent in response to the continuing conflict between Israel and Palestine, which has taken several lives. Twitter users reacted angrily to his tweet, urging CNN to fire him right away. They also requested that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey remove him from the site entirely.
Craig Strathearn, a Twitter user, posted a screenshot of Adeel Raja’s disturbing and highly offensive anti-Semitic comments, which he later deleted after the new uproar. Strathearn wrote, “He really likes Hitler. He’s written for CNN since 2013, I guess CNN likes to employ Nazis,”
Greg Price tweeted, “This guy has 54 articles under his byline at CNN. They should probably fire whoever does their background checks,”
Yashar Ali tweeted, “Horrifying tweets by CNN freelancer @adeelraja,”
