Chace Numata was a Tigers minor league catcher who died in a skateboarding accident in Pennsylvania on Monday, September 2nd, 2019. He was 27. Police in the southeastern city of Pennsylvania discovered unresponsive Friday afternoon. Chace Numata played for Detroit's Double-A Erie affiliate, the SeaWolves. Numata was at the Detroit organisation in his first season. He battled with Erie and Triple-A Toledo a combined.244 with four home runs and 28 RBIs.

Chace Numata Career

Numata was drafted in Hawaii after high school and started his professional career in the Philadelphia system in 2010. He also performed in the organisation of the New York Yankees. Al Avila, general manager of Tigers informed the squad about the death of Numata after the Detroit match.

“It is obviously a very quiet clubhouse right now. My staff and I only got to know him in spring training this year, but he was a real gamer. He loved to play baseball and he had a great personality. This is a tough day, especially since so many of our guys knew him,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said.

In his major league debut on Monday, Tigers pitcher Bryan Garcia, who played this year with Numata, pitched a scoreless ninth inning. He said

“Chace was an all-time human being. I never met a single person who didn’t love him,”

Chace Numata died at the age of 27 in an Erie hospital on Monday, September 2, 2019 after being injured in a Pennsylvania skateboarding incident. The death was announced by the family of Numata and the team. On Monday, the Tigers published a declaration confirming the death of Numata:

“The Detroit Tigers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chace Numata, who was a catcher for our Double A affiliate in Erie,” the statement read. “Though this was his first year with our organization, Chace was beloved by many from our Major League club through all levels of our player development system. He had an engaging personality that quickly established him as a leader on and off the field, and his presence will be forever remembered in our organization and beyond. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates and coaches.”

On Friday morning, Numata was rushed to the hospital after policemen discovered him unconscious about 2:15 a.m. on the floor in downtown Erie, bleeding from the head. A motorist who saw him on the highway supposedly called the police to the scene.

According to the Detroit Free Press, monitoring footage showed Numata riding down a downtown road when he stopped his motorized skateboard and sent him down.

The news was shocking to the fans of Numata's Erie SeaWolves, who wrapped up their Monday season. Numata was a favorite of his teammates and one of the loudest in the dugout

“That will definitely stay,” Rogers said after a 4-3 loss to Minnesota at Comerica Park on Monday September 2nd. “Chace helped me get here and his memory will always be with me.”
